Many individuals and organizations who regularly employ an anti-capitalist or anti-colonial lens to their work and life, bristle at the mention of “systems.” When they hear that word, it brings to mind the many oppressive systems at play in hurting our families and communities. But “systems,” in and of them selves are not inherently harmful. For thousands of years, Indigenous people have maintained beautiful and complex systems, sustaining reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationships with all living beings and this planet. It is possible for people to design organizational structures that mirror this time-tested wisdom and promote equity, functionality, effectiveness, work-life balance, and care.

Our experience has shown us that leadership is a group project and that each individual possesses different strengths and areas for growth. Often leaders with the vision and community connection, don’t always have time to file paperwork, prepare invoices, or respond to emails.
